Earth could be facing challenges, yet a sense of hope remains. A fresh honor from the interdisciplinary festival the Starmus festival seeks to motivate individuals to act.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name will honor to pay tribute to the esteemed British primatologist who died recently. It seeks to acknowledge those who champion the natural world.

The Medal's Framework

Initial honorees will be revealed during the Starmus VIII festival in Tenerife and La Palma, which will run from 17–22 October the coming year.

It was shared that Goodall, a former member of the festival's board, had backed the medal's establishment. “The concept of having this medal, and Starmus being entrusted to oversee it, originated with Jane,” a statement said. “She expressed she would like this to happen. And I think because of the unique connection she had with the festival.”

“The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will acknowledge sustainable programmes carried out to build an environment a better place for all living beings and ecosystems and provide encouragement for the continuation that work,” said a family member.

Structure and Vision

One of the founders of Starmus stated that the medal – unveiled at a scientific institution – would probably encompass various fields.

“It will be modeled after the Stephen Hawking medal honoring scientific outreach established exactly 10 years ago,” it was explained. Goodall was an honoree of that award.

The goal is that the medal can motivate action. “It’s about motivating others to participate and to show concern and to work toward these goals, really. Whether or not we’re optimistic, we must look at working all that is possible,” it was added. “Accept the possibility of setbacks, yet we must have to work toward success.”

A family member involved in environmental protection shared optimism that “with guidance and once enabled, humans can be diligent stewards of our planet”, pointing to the programs of a foundation that, in addition to its projects, helps the next generation get involved with their community, wildlife, and the natural world.

“As my late grandmother constantly emphasized, the choices we make each day have an impact and it is up to us the kind of difference we choose to create,” he said. “We still have an opportunity and this medal will offer support and increase understanding about the positive actions that people are making.”
