The Growing ‘Wealth-Poverty Gap’: How Affluence and Deprivation Now Sit Cheek by Jowl in England.

In a postwar estate known as ‘The Nunny’, inhabitants live in homes just several yards from their wealthier neighbours in the adjacent Scartho village. A 1.8-metre-high wall literally divides the two communities in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, sealing off roads and walkways that previously linked them.

“This is the divide between rich and poor,” said Serenity Colley, aged 37. “It has been there since I’ve known. I doubt they’ll bring it down because I don’t think they’ll want to associate with us.”

An Increasingly Common Pattern Across the Country

Analysis of official statistics shows how deep disparity can run, at times over nothing more than a few metres of tarmac, a line of hedges or a wall. Decades of austerity and lack of funding mean almost two-thirds of local authorities now have a neighbourhood classified as one of the poorest in the country.

The geographical widening of poverty has led to a sharp increase in the quantity of locations where deprived and well-off residents end up living side by side. Just a few years ago, only 65 of the poorest areas adjoined one of the least deprived. That figure increased to 119 in the most recent data.

A Barrier Which Does More Than Separate Space

In Grimsby, the gap is the most pronounced in the country and painfully apparent. The barrier is much more than a metaphorical divide; it causes tangible problems for everyday life.

  • School runs that should take a quarter of an hour turn into an sixty-minute detour.
  • Access to key amenities like grocery stores, educational facilities and care homes is hindered.
  • The site can attract antisocial behaviour, with reports of litter being thrown over the wall and related issues.

“People strive to have a well-kept home and garden, and then you live opposite that,” said one resident, motioning at the corroded metal wall.

Local Bonds Against a Backdrop of Challenges

Within a local community centre, workers emphasise that support transcends addresses. “Your postcode is not a reliable indicator of your personal struggles,” said chief executive Tracey Good.

Despite being placed in the most deprived 10% for income, employment, education, health and crime, the estate boasts a strong sense and sense of togetherness among its residents. By contrast, Scartho is classified among the most prosperous 10% overall.

A Similar Story: Stanhope in Ashford

This phenomenon is mirrored across the country. The Stanhope estate in Ashford, Kent, a 1960s overspill estate, is in the most disadvantaged tenth of areas in the country. It is immediately adjacent by large detached homes built in the early 2000s that sit in the wealthiest tenth for job prospects and living environment.

“They might have bigger houses, but here there’s a stronger community,” commented Phil Hockley, 63. “You’ll probably find many people in the new builds don’t even speak to each other.”

The financial gap is evident: an typical family home costs about £275,000 on the estate, while on the other side equivalent properties fetch about £410,000.

Residents describe a tangible feeling of being overlooked. “Our neighbourhood is neglected,” said resident Susan Riley-Nevers. “In this area our amenities have slowly been taken away, and most of the issues we face here are related to poverty.”

The rise in these ‘deprivation divides’ paints a portrait of an increasingly divided society, where wealth and deprivation are often awkwardly in close proximity.
