Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
