The Evolution of a Movement can be marked by distinct phases.

1. The Big Idea

An inspiring figure or coaches propose an innovative concept offering a panacea for struggling players.

And so it goes. They’re getting ready to storm the compound overseas. Pressure is mounting. Signs of trouble appear from the out-houses. An isolated player, vulnerable, anxious, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT displayed prominently in chicken blood, has come staggering from the field and is being led away in secrecy to a different team in county cricket.

Remember the beginning, when the world was still young? The era of early Bazball, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Initial Adoration

Movement founders promise a new start, a brighter tomorrow, support, redemption within a community united in belief in the philosophy.

How did it feel back then? Players celebrating feeling good. Ink. Muscles. Focus. Confident masculinity. Oh sure, The squad insist they don’t use the label, amusingly because if it doesn’t exist, what did we see?

But we know what it is. It’s the batsman executing a stroke so outrageous it has to be pixelated. It’s the thrill of the captain in ultimate mode, a look that says: thoughtful warrior, rugged appearance, natural look, so authentically Modern Savage you wouldn’t be surprised to notice and find him positioned in the field stripped to the waist and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s Ben Duckett often seen speaking publicly, resembling a joyful figure formally attired, expressing thoughts like we’re breaking down traditions. Certainly, the atmosphere, initially, was uplifting.

3. Expansion Period

Growth phase. Cohesion maintained through repetition of key phrases. These ideas can appear contradictory as a loyalty check.

Is it just me? The backlash, the anger, the disappointment post-defeat appears excessive, too much. The batting collapsed during the match, as they often do in Australia. Currently, we see the criticism, the frustration, the perception of the team as a disgrace. 4. External Conflict

Problems arise due to setbacks. Yet, mistakes are denied. It begins to thrive on hostility externally.

In truth, a few days before the next match, we have now reached a delicious point of tension in the journey of this movement. They might succeed in the next Test through aggressive play. More likely, defeat could come swiftly. And if they do lose it appears we could be witnessing the final stage.

Before that happens, several aspects to note about this. In the past, back in those heady early days, of passion and hope, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. People were very angry, which was helpful because everyone knows the best way of proving something definitely isn’t a cult is when its acolytes respond with anger objecting to the questioning of its truths.

What has happened in the last few days are equally notable. Opposition to the style has turned into a movement. We have a uniformly angry internet, angry English pundits, shots of angry middle-aged travelling fans disappointed by the short match, similar to timeshare owners seeking justice.

Meanwhile, we have the wider backdrop of Australia’s more nuanced ingrained annoyance towards the unconventional visitors, out there saying, hey, that thing you love and have honed as one way of separating yourself culturally from us, well, it’s all a bit of a gag after all.

And this is the real point. Everything is a cult. The style was a trend as the game has its own culture. In fact, the team has long been exclusive, a group, a private event, an insular community with two hundred years of opaque and ritualistic cult history supporting it. Historically, this was where entry is limited. It’s the British pastime of England, the pioneering brand. And notably, Britain is itself a cult, a system of unknown levels, a monarchy still exists.

The team have been isolated in this environment for years. Attempting to break free, to create a less brutal environment, they are just repeating their past, forming a new circle, a closed circle, but doing it this time with a modern squad and a coach promoting authenticity as long as yourself is quite a lot like myself.

Live where your feet are. Run towards the danger. Despite efforts, you remain stuck.
